People all around me started criticizing the cause of poor farewells to lack of cohesion and unity. True, i must agree that factions and small groupisms do have a negative role and it is always human tendency to form groups within groups. (About groups - A Tale of two groups is one post coming up soon on this blog)

Well ... Modern Technology does have a major role in which farewells fail to evoke the same kind of sentiment that was there much earlier.

The pervasive nature of Mobiles and technology such as "Chat", "Orkut" and Email really have brought people much closer than they ever imagined. Separation was no longer a hated word. People stay connected right throughout .. Even taking mobiles to their bathrooms was being considered a status symbol. Under such a situation, how can one feel the emotion and separation in a farewell function ? All such things happened during my good old days as there were no mobiles at that time and email was expensive. Being in touch by the friendly postal department was the one and only way of being in touch. The farewell function brought back memories and the mere feeling of being separated in days time brought tears to some of the eyes.

The second might be the "AGE - factor" . It is time that due to global climatic conditions (i have been working hard on my kyoto project lately :) ), people are ageing rapidly. The trend is disturbing because it is "More in the mind these days and less in the body". Once you come to an MBA, this trend is even more seen .. People are 28 at the age of 23. Everyone tries to be a manager and the presence of youthfullness is seen as a sign of weakness and immaturity in such a world. The younger you are, the more passion, love and exuberance that you might have for such functions. Age drills in a lot of useless notions and impurity in one's head and teaches one to remain as un-emotional as possible.

The third and the final one has to be presence of faculty. Somehow at MBA level faculty, barring a few exceptions, have just been mere facilitators. The student - teacher interaction at an informal level was non-existent for most of the cases. A faculty presence in a farewell at times brings back memories of his or her class at that particular moment and transports your mind back to those good-ol days ... Bottom-line ... We all missed our dearest Prof. A Parasuraman in the farewell. A farewell speech from him, would have really made us feel that we are going to miss IIT for a long long time.

Somehow, i still remember my 10th class farewell till date. I knew that i would be moving out soon due to my Dad's umpteenth transfer to another place (Some how he still continues to do so). Some of the skinny faces i saw then have turned out to be fine young men to date. Infact, the skinniest bespactled fellow joined a gym after that and now can give a model a run for his money. The females have turned out to be the same .. (Dumping people then .. and doing the same now . hehehehe !!!) ... Your's truly was the fattest in his batch and has done a lot of work over the years to stay in shape ...

Some of the faces of year 1997 were

"Kunte Karate" - An engineer with Infosys now
"Rocky" - Again an engineer with Infosys
"Alampalli/Bandar" - Unable to locate him these days . He's somewhere in US...
"Moti" - Last heard, he was toiling in some auto company in US
"Doctor Bhalla" - She's delivering a baby a month now ... hehehe .. chill !! she's a gynic
"Padu" - A CA rocking toiling hard for his clients
"Gauri" - An MBA somehow trying to break even in Finance
"Sallu Bhai" - A politician joining the footsteps of his dad
"Battery" - A person hell-bent on accumulating degrees to date.

Anyway, some of the faces i hope will rock in the year 2017 in addition to this list

-- The bearded One - Paramjit Singh
-- The one and only fashion icon / The elvis of my batch - Sudhanshu Diwakar
-- The Gult with a Mallu Moustache - Ravindra Bob or rather Bob to everyone
-- The CEO - Shreevardhan Kabra
-- The Net-worker ( Shared by Aravindan and Mohit agarwal )
-- The Topper - Amrutaunshu
-- Mama and Mappilai - Aswin and Ashok
-- Youth Icon - Arun V
-- K7/Poet - yours truly
-- MOJO - One and only Mandar Suhas Joshi
-- NAWAB - Kumar Abhinav Srivastava - Man of vast untapped potential

That's it from me right now .. The character "Barney" in 'How I Met your Mother' (a soap on which there would be an entry later) has provided the due words at suitable places for it though....

I donned upon the observing hat and here it is ....

I call this a match between a committed individual Vs Die-hard single ... Now there can be exceptions too and confused idiots who often waver between the two are not handled in this blog ....

Presenting here are the 10 things that show that you are committed Vs 10 things to show that you are single:

1. Your phone book and mailbox contains entries/mails from a single person

Vs

Your phone book contains entries of people all over the world - could be the
person you've last met on train to a wrong number which you received just days back ..

2. The phone is not over yet. It is the biggest attachment that he/she has in life. You can never see such people without a phone. They get mysterious phone calls especially at night. A typical fellow wanders aimlessly with something stuck in his ear right through out the night

Vs

A person who doesn't even know to use the full features of his phone. Never without a phone as well as a balance. (why do such ppl need balance on the phone ?? )

3. (reason strictly for males, females are difficult to predict)
You suddenly become the darling the all of the girls of your class

Vs

All the girls always start becoming a darling to you, the moment you see them ...

4. Your favourite line - " come on !! Grow up Man ! They are not my type. " This gets so over that at times it leads people to comment that you are gay

Vs

" Hey !! Man !! did you see her *** .(there's a long dialogue and list here but i leave it open to interpretation... (Finally it ends as ...) Girls are either good or too good "

5. When your friend asks you out, you first choice would be to go to a place for worship like temple etc. or in other words you prefer to hang-out in such places. Somehow a family maturity begins to set in you

Vs

You tend to go to adventurous places ... ahem !! Can't name all of them here and age somehow starts reversing for you.

6. Mood swings begin to set in .. Such species are often found irrascible (too much effect of biodiversity assignment for me these days ....)

Vs

He swings "it" in "Moods" (pun intended)

7. Movies in your PC tend to be: "You've Got mail", "When harry met sally", " serendipity", and the rest organized in Romance, comedies, oscar winners, documentaries ...

Vs

(reason strictly for males) Movies tend to be well... Ahem !!! . he watches movies of languages mainly russian, italian, arabic .... and they keep changing as they are often deleted after being viewed once ...

8. Is always logged on the net as outside activies do not excite much

Vs

You find him on field right next to his/her potential target ..

9. You usually prefer to move usually in pairs ...

Vs

You somehow manage to find large groups of singles with you at all times ...

10. You suddenly start liking KIDS around you

Vs

Kids suddenly start liking such kind of people (hehehehehe) ... Proven by observation.

That's it from me .....

Nothing is Mine, Everything is thine

The poet is back after a brief hibernation. The hiatus was due to the lack of an inspirational topic for quite sometime. A recent Poornima night in IIT-B campus brought words to my mind. I simply sat gazing at the full moon and was struck by it's grace ... The following lines came out spontaneously ...

Splendour of full moon makes a treat for my sore eyes,
"Who/What could have created it ?" I then soon begin to sigh,
Was it the stars, Was it the sun, A question my mind can't miss,
The scene makes me forget the creator, i simply revel in it's bliss ...

The night seemed dominating and tried to spread it's cloak,
The moon was mischeavous and tries to hide in the leaves of oak,
A celestial spectacle is created by a friendly tussle,
"Who wins at the end" is really an unsolvable puzzle ...

I had seen objects but nothing seemed as clean and white,
I only pray that the blind could see such a sight,
The moon is untouched and strives to remain pure,
For fools like me, it brings romance for sure ...

I rush to the room, to capture the cosmos in my lens,
Hoping not to lose it to the clouds, makes me soon feel tense,
But there's more to this picture, the poet soon begin to sense,
As the noise of crickets lends a beautiful rhythm to the silence ...

Soon Hours pass by and i simply spend time admiring it,
The movements around me doesn't bother me a bit,
For such sights, it is strenous to string a rhyme,
The only thing my mind seems to do is to thank the creator of THINE ....

Amen.

What is in an Image ???

I have been listening to a very wise man lately. Offlate, one of the profound statements which he has made has really provoked my inner echleons of conscience and thought. The statement goes this way - "Image is your greatest strength and your greatest enemy". I had been a strong believer only in the first part of this statement... but the 2nd part somehow stirred and shook me. My mind again went into an introspection mode for really figuring out this conundrum and i must admit that it really took me a sleepless night to figure out what really it meant ..... Hope the following paragraph might save another night for you :-) (i can't gurantee though)

The first part of the statement is really a GANDHIAN statement and requires no explanation. Image is a greatest enemy ... Well !!! Truly speaking i could really look at my own life backwards and could really interpret it's true inner meaning. People took me for granted at every point of time. My life started moving from One Certainity to another certainity to another certainity. My choice of clothes, choice of books, choice of foods, choice of activities and everything was more or less decided ... There was absolutely no fun .. People would predict what i would do next and albeit most of them were really successful at it ...

Then came a time of my freedom ... I was away from home for about 6 long years .. enough to shatter all images at all points of time. My Mother saw a different Keshav each time i came home. .. I must affirm that the goodness remained at all points and at no point i compromised on something wrong ... It was just that i started beginning to discover that i could do a lot more than what i or a matter of fact others traditionally believed ...
This started a powerful process of introspection .. A tool for which i again profusely thank a wise old man for initiating it ... I could talk and almost easily converse with any tom, dick harry on street and this led to some interesting incidents and stories .... (obviously for my grand-children in the future !! :-) )

I started dabbling into various activities .. .My good-ol friend lamented on the fact that i am although full of energy but i lack focus .. i again went into introspection for this answer and the answer itself came to me that i was focussed in what i was doing .... i gave 120% in every activity that i indulged into (Even ;-) at one point of time ... i think other people can affirm this fact .. hehehehe ) it's another matter that it might not have given any intended results .. but the experience is worth more than anything else put togethar ...

to put it short that's life. .. NOBODY or rather Noone should bind you or lock your potential and capabilities ... As it is rightly said " You only think what you are and you can do what you think you can really do " ....

My life has changed from unpredictability to unpredictability to unpredictability .. Several things happened ... People never believed that a fat old person like me can run ... I tried my level best in finishing the 21Km marathon ...End result !! I was far too slow .. but the finish gave me immense confidence ... People gave me a slim chance in other sports ... i really feel i do a decent job than most others .. My own folks felt i was an introvert ... things changed over a period of time ...
Somehow only Music eludes me during all this time .. Inspite of having a trained carnatic singer as my mother .. i still am not able to grasp it at a higher level .. This is my next venture now ....

Believe me .. i cherish and enjoy every moment of it ... I somehow revel these days in unpredictability .. I simply say WOW at it and !!! and move on ....

PS: My attempt at writing philosophical stuff for the first time .... Let's see . poetry's next as and when a suitable inspiration arrives ;-)

An Indian Lover Boy

I have been in existence since 1982 but spices of life all around me have shown as to how the lover-boys of the generation have evolved. I expect the feminine gender to tell their perspective from the other side as i have been unable to observe much in this regard.

The turning point was a friend whom i never expected would go in for a love marriage but finally ended up with one. This has set my thought process rolling and i am beginning to see how lover boys have evolved over the years. A  small peek into my father's diaries by chance have shown me the world of 70's and 80's and how love progressed during that era ... { Don't worry dad !! I  knew that you had expunged all crucial entries :-) }

Lover Boy of the 60's: This was the time of Dev- Anand types ... Any bloke who had a good sense of humour could manage to attract most of the chicks around him. Love was much closed and took place in full privacy unlike the later years. Shakespeare and keats provided the much needed fodder for the words. The pick-up lines started from here which even some of my friends use the same today. For example: The practice of gifting Teddies,key-chains ... started way-back here and some of my friends even continue to do so. Come on mates !!! Evolve ...

Lover Boy of the 70's : The era of the angry young man ... Any man fitting description of Amitabh would do for females and likewise any female fitting description of Rakhee gulzar would do for most males ... By Amitabh i mean, the person should have a Rajdoot or bullet, should be tall, lanky and should have that anger in his eyes ... Not much comments here except that anger was very positive "TURN ON" point for males and for females it had to be "SHYNESS".

Lover Boy of the 80's and 90's: This was the time when being rebellious was rewarding Anybody with long hair, tatooes, ear-rings would be called as lover boy .. the shirts would be like the one which one of my friends wears even today ... Elvis types ... any fella looking different from the crowd would create his market demand .. this applied for the geeks too and for the first time they came in contention during this era ...

Lover boy from 1995 onwards : This was the time of "Sensitive male" .. Actually concept is bull-shit except that the male was less chauvinistic than his earlier seniors. Frequent calls to females enquiring about her welfare and especially " aaj ka din kaisa raha ??" was seen as a quotient for sensitiveness .... although personally speaking i feel that there is nothing else creative to talk and hence this concept emerged ... People remained sensitive towards "their females" and were suddenly rebellious at home with other females like mothers and sisters.
Places like Mumbai and Delhi became really the hip-hop places to be and it was not common to see people romancing other people much much senior to them. Now don't you think "This is sensitive".

Lover Boy of Today: Now this is the icing on the cake .. With the evolution of intelligent systems like the chat-rooms and social networking sites .. people who were extremely shy suddenly found a way to beat all others in the race. Such people discovered talent which was in much demand - The Talent to spontaneously write and express the right feelings by writing. Geographical distance became no longer a constraint and a boy from jammu could easily date a girl from the south all within the confines of his room. In short, "Any fellow who could type and write decently could afford to have a girl". An online friend suddenly became the best thing which one could possess.... Things like Smartness, beauty, poise, grace, elegance, finesse, dexterity, artfulness took a backseat and an abstract concept emerged called as " The beauty within ". I am not saying at any point that something is amiss here ... It is just an evolution.

This was the era of the IT fellows .... Being in front of computer right through out the day robbed them of their time which they would have spent outside ...By the way, don't be surprised to know IT guys have the 2nd best hook-up quotient (the best ones are the NRI's dear .. Nobody can match them ) these days as they have the money as well as the necessary time to spend time (online time :-) ) with their females ....

Some of the professions which i might have missed out would be doctors, lawyers, scientists and consultants (yours truly) .... It would not be wise to comment about doctors and a waste to comment about lawyers but consultants ... yes !!! People who are on frequent tours right from the day they start ... More nitty gritties on this after i actually start working though ... Maybe some one would write a blog by then too ....

The Power of Huddle

Cut to a time in 2004 December ... A small lab in DRDO with just 50 scientists working were attempting to form a cricket team to represent in inter-DRDO cricket tournament at hyderabad. Yours truly was in full enthu to put up a team to atleast represent the lab and looked forward to this as a good team building excercise in the laboratory.

Nobody gave us even an inkling of chance of winning a match. But the eleven that we had were a determined 11 lead by Rahul Kumar and ably supported by Naresh, Gopi, Balaram, Ravi, Shofiqul, yours truly, Abhinav, Balaji, Anil Terkar and Bhowmick. This 11 created shockwaves in that year by reaching the semi-finals and beating big-shot teams like RCI, DLRL, ASL before finally losing to DRDL(eventual winners of the trophy). I felt proud at being a part of such a performing team and almost building it from scratch by approaching each and every person to practice for the game and so on ...

Cut to 2007 ... six determined boys .. Arun, Timmal, Ananth, murali, vaibhav and yours truly were again on the verge of achieving immortality for sjmsom by reaching the semis of basketball. The team was written off even before they played their first match and the day they played .... rest was history ...

Now all this key-strokes is not to illustrate the roller-coaster ride that i was having over the past few years ... i.e motivating people and making them perform the max ....

The common points between both these events was the GREAT INDIAN HUDDLE ... We used to huddle before each match. The huddle used to instill a confidence and motivation which hithertho would not have been possible individually. The huddle dissolved all our fears and brought in a synergy which we never imagined. The huddle psychologically empowered us to clear our obstacles and pushed us to the limits which we never foresaw. It made us realize the individual unused potential that each one of us had .. be it while playing cricket or playing basketball ..

I salute to the Indian cricket team who made this powerful psychological team building and motivating tool of which i have been a beneficiary ....

Life is Beautiful

A Movie !!! What should i say ? It is not a movie, it shows a way of life. A poignant relationship between a father and son that brought tears to my eyes at the end. This movie has shaken, stirred the emotions which i have and has brought forth a simple topic in a very elegant manner.

A Father who inspite of the most gory situation is in full humour in front of his 7 year old son. In the first half of movie, the father or the central character Guido is shown as a flirtatious happy-go-lucky individual who at all times says to his "would-be" - " Bon journ !! Pricipessia " ...
They finally get married and have a son name Joshua in the movie.. The father & son are of jewish descent and hence are sent to a concentration camp in the fascist regime of Italy.

Here, young people are brutually killed in the camp. The father uses all his humour to keep his son engaged and doesn't for a moment make him realize that there is death in every corner of the camp. The child consistently asks a lot of questions to his father as to why other kids are dissapearing ? People are telling that they burn people here to make buttons and son ... But the father manages to bring a humorous answer to every question posed by his son... He remains cheerful in all moments of the movie and it is this character which made me feel that yes .. I should be like him .

You better watch the movie to get a full grasp of the way in which the father engages his son.

In the movie it is said " This is a simple story - but not an easy one to tell " .... Hence this blog is about this story - but definitely not an easy one to write.

PS: Along with 12-angry men and shawshank redemption, this movie too ranks right up there....

The Winner's Curse

After a long time, i found something interesting to write upon . This concept was witnessed live during my trip to Matheran. A phenomenon exists in economic theories often exemplified as the WINNERS CURSE. Here the winner in a group event may end up being worse off than others. This is more common in auctions but it is even more popular when a group of friends embark upon a trip.

Scene #1: We are all sitting in a hotel in Matheran ready to have breakfast.

Aravindan : Hmmm ... Lots of south Indian dishes here .. I think i will order Idli ..
Pamma & Me: 2 Aloo pohas for both of us ...
Karthik: Well ... the cheapest here seems to be idli -vada .. I will order that ...
Pamma: Don't worry karthik .. Whatever the bill ... it is to be divided equally .. It is very difficult to assign individual bills to persons ..

Rajasekar: Wow !! One masala dosa .. with Amul Cool for me then ...
Gyan: I think Puran Poli will do better for me then ...

Karthik : Hey !! What is this ? I think i better have a 75/- Gujarathi thali for breakfast ....

Suman & Aravindan: Wow !! Man !! Aloo poha is fundoo ... another aloo poha along with idli for breakfast..
Myself & Vikas : Wah Gyan !!! Pooran Poli badhiya hai ... bhaiyya !!! do Puran Poli aur lana ...

Everybody started ordering now all exotic dishes because everybody felt as the bill was being shared .. it was useless to optimize and hence the entire breakfast bill ended up as 500/- for our group ....

Scene #2: In a Nimbu-Pani stall in Matheran ..

Sujay : Hey !! I am feeling thirsty .. Anybody in for a lemon juice ?
Karthik, Aravindan, Suman & Myself: Hey Sujay !! Count us in too ...

Soon others joined ... and the bill was shared in common ... Now one of us felt of having a 2nd glass .. the moment he said he wanted to have a 2nd glass ... 5 others who simply jumped in as they did not want to be affected by winners curse ....

Thus in this winner's curse ... each person does not see as personal optimization of expenses as a way of reducing overall expenses .. The truth is each person simply does not want to subsidize the expense of some other person .. As a result he ends up enjoying himself to the maximum possible at each point ... He might not want to order a dish but as soon as he sees others ordering.. he feels why not give a try ... Anyway everything is gonna be shared and thus this results in him/her trying dishes which he otherwise would never have during such occasions .....

I know that i would not do justice by simply writing a paragraph on it but it is really fun in watching such an event live and often ends up in a lot of jokes and fun all around ...

Suicides Revisited

A small piece of thought was raging in my mind for the past couple of days. (Only few people would know what the real thought really is ... but chill fellas ... this time for blog records it's something else .. hehehehe :-))
Only small pieces make a lot of noise in your brain. This thought has then manifested to become a blog due to a small discussion in front of my B-school campus. (i guess people will now stop discussing things with me hence-forth .... as i would seem to write their thoughts as well)

<flash>There were a couple of suicides in my campus and the it would not take a rocket scientist to figure out that "South Indian" students were the ones committing this grave act... It really shocks me .. there are better, painless ways to kill oneself but hanging from the ceiling .. Oh my gosh !! It is this way which causes maximum pain to the fellow as he sees and feels his own death in every second of the act ..

I was thinking what would lead a person to such an act ... where his brain snaps and logical mind stops working ...

In South India, people place a lot of importance to academic curriculum. As young colts, one is often expected to excel in his studies and secure atleast 90-95% marks in each subject. Even language subjects are not spared as it is not common to get 95% marks in English and Hindi... Even discussion between people ranges in this subject only .. "Oh !! My Boy is extremely sincere in his class ... Secures 95% each time and manages to be in top-5 ..." Another mother would remark " My son always comes from school and starts reading newspapers as his Dad !! " A quick glance at the son would reveal that he is just 8 year old toddler .... On the contrast two north indian mothers would discuss in a following way .. "My Son has two-two girlfriends" .. " What !! Great .. My son has learnt to play Guitar " ... "My son even helps me in cooking...."

This slowly deprives him of other good habits like music, debating, sports, Dating (hehehehe !! as in my friend sudhanshu's lingo .. "Going Around" ),. Thus these students on growing up become one-sided and siloed in their personality and when they find that things don't go their way .. they have nothing else to take recourse to. Unrelenting parental pressure and peer pressure simulataneously stretches their brain and forces them to commit such an act ..

Even take my own case ... I ran marathon, climbed mountains , wrote poetry (hey !! i wrote humorous ones .. serious ones are reserved for future) and blogs , avid swimmer, played basketball and a host of other sports, travelled across countries ... but at the end of the day .. my parents/grandparents (esp grandfather) keep worrying .... " Kanna !! Why do you get involved in all this ??? After looking at the grades I seem to wonder as to who screwed whom ?

2) After Ogling at a girl fully, a person says "She's not my type da .." although he wouldn't mind a second bit in looking at her again.

3) The night before an exam, everyone says " Hey !! I haven't studied at all .... ".. Next day you find them debating over an answer .. Wow !! Real pick up dude !!

4) People claim " I don't know how i passed engineering ?" but knew when to study, when to take notes and when to attend classes ... Are'nt all these activities supposed help you in passing the engineering exams.

5) Everybody claims to write blog for their own personal sake, but always jump with excitement at the sight of the first comment.

6) Nobody ever likes the females of their classes .. Always females from other classes/batches attract people. (Don't blame me for this ... My class is really like that !!!) And the best part is that you can directly compare such females to "www" internet domain names .. the ones you like have already been taken !!

7) The person giving you advice on major problems in life would have never encountered one . ...

Finally Poetry Writing : People love to do it or people do it to love ??

The Art of Being Busy

I have been struggling for quite sometime to keep myself busy .... Reading books, jogging around, attending conferences . Inspite of all these, i was always accessible to others.. Somehow i always found my batchmates a lot busier than me.

This led to a very meticulous excercise in observing my batchmates over the past one-week and finally found certain points through which i guess i can really give a perception of being busy to others

1. Through Mobiles:

Put Mobiles on silent mode and give others a perception of attending meeting.

Keep watching your mobile periodically on pretext of date / Balance Check.

Pick up wrong-number calls during classes / meetings.

2. Through Emails:

                Shoot 50 mails a day especially Tim-lak-laks.

Keep asking for every small thing by email something lik Hey Guys !! What do u suggest ? ..... Hey Guys !! Please form groups Please mail this me ASAP and so on .....

3. Have daily meetings at night at a predecided location for any damn agenda .. Some of spicy ones which i observed are : ------------------------------------------------------------
Don't you get it .. There is no agenda at all for most of the times ....

4. Involve a lot of females in the group. Kafi timepass ho jata hai ;) . If i comment more, i will start getting bumps from my batchmates..

5. Always keep walking from one wing to another. On being asked, just don't reply but smile and move on. People really think that there is some agenda or the other .....
If you really have to reply then say ... " OH !! Lots of work yaar .. I have to do this <blah><blah><blah> .. I am handling <blah><blah><blah> .... I am responsible for <blah><blah><blah> ...... " Always works !!!! :)

6. Put nose in front for the smallest of the things. "Come-on Guys !! Chief - Guest ko pastry mat do ... unko samosey sey kaam chala lo " .... That way .. you designate yourself as an important person in the meeting

7. Never Be in your room ... Always be in someone else's room.. Breakfast+Lunch + dinner .. at times even for sleep

8. Always stay away from orkut, yahoo, skype .. reply to orkut scraps after 3 days .... some ppl reply even if u don't scrap them .. it forms a routine

9. Set fancy status message on yahoo (@Work, @ college, @Be right back, @Exams ... )

The Biggest one ...

10. Try sleeping in lectures .... Ppl get the impression that you are really busy the previous night ...

Aur Batao Syndrome

People have forgotten to talk on phone with each other and have started using internet chat in a big way. This country has people of the same culture and fabric as that of India. But there's one striking noticeable thing in this country. This country does not possess a MIDDLE CLASS ...

For many of my friends, who despise being the middle class, think again !!! The middle class is one of the most important elements in the demographics of the country. It bridges the gap between the rich and poor and thus minimizes friction between the two. Bangladesh, is divided into two distinct classes, the top 10% are the elite who are rich than most indians and the bottom 90% are poor who are even poorer than most indians. Now this big gap brings with it it's own set of problems.

First of all even though bangladesh has the population and the numbers, it does not have a class that simulates demand. That is only possible with the middle class which has a disposable income. Secondly, the population does not have a tendency to save as a whole. The rich do not want to save as they feel they have plenty of money and the poor want to spend the money on luxuries, which they feel are rare and hence must be enjoyed whenever possible.

The middle class on the other hand start saving the day they are born. I need not elaborate on this as most of the readers must have had a good first hand experience in this regard.

The second most striking feature in Bangladesh and in most countries is that it lacks diversity ...... Only two countries have diversity in them and are hence on top one is USA and the other is our very own INDIA ...... With diversity you have people of varied abilities contributing to the country .... Bangladesh lacks the wily MARWARI/GUJARATI Businessman, The Sharp & quick TAM, The beautiful MARATHIS & MALLUS , The Brave Sikh Sardars & the hard-working Behari bhaiyas and many many more .... Probably as my friend rightly commented... All it takes is to put two Marwari Businessmen into Bangladesh and a middle class will soon rise to bridge the gap ...

I salute again to this great Indian Middle Class :)

When Democracy is worse than Dictatorship

The recent ruling on reservation issue has drawn a lot of flak from the student community. People have gone for blackout night protest (check www.youth4equality.org) to candle light walks and what not? All inspired by movie Rang De basanti i guess. Some of my friends who in practical life I know are never capable of even coming inches close to bravery write extremely motivating mails. My principle is simple, practice what you preach !! If you want people to come to a protest march or something, be the first to reach there and motivate by meeting people FACE-TO-FACE and make this cause as your cause ... Anyway, avuthu-pottu today is not directed at such people as there is no point in wasting key-strokes on this hypocrisy issue ....

Today avuthu-pottu is directed at DEMOCRACY itself .... It is very difficult to bend a DEMOCRACTIC government. You can easily twist a DICTATORIAL regime. It is in fact more flexible than a Democractic regime.. You just need to flex a single person and your policies fall in place... Now i received a lot of mails from people stripping ARJUN SINGH and making him responsible for this... No ARJUN SINGH has on date the backing of all VOTE-DRIVEN POLITICIANS including the support of the Opposition(Don't let the saffron party of the hook next time) .

Whenever a democractic government decides to do something, IT DOES ... COME WHAT MAY.. Because a democractic government is people driven and not person-driven... I request all students to look at reality and see that 70% of India comes from Backward castes. These castes form the big VOTE BANK and these are the category of people who REALLY VOTE UNLIKE US... They brave the heat, rain, cold to vote for their choice of candidate something which we really don't do often... Anyway, it is a different thing that these people are not realizing that reservation is not really helping them ... If they realized this, they really woudn't be backward and needy as on date.... But who cares ???

Thus, you do whatever protest march or something, a democractic government is very strong.... Be it strikes during INDIRA-GANDHI TIME, JAYA-LALITHA TIME or anything else... Sorry to say!!! I LAUD YOUR TIRELESS EFFORT IN this regard .... but sadly it is a case of MAJORITY KILLING THE MINORITY.... which is the problem of a democractic government ......... people talk about IIT'ans floating a party for people's governance ... Please see that our Prime Minister is more Intellectual and wise than most IIT'ans but he too is unable to do anything in this regard ...... Corporates like NARAYANAMURTHY, RATAN TATA are not even giving a statement in the press on this....

THE POLICY IS LIKE A DRAUPADI BEING UNDRESSED IN PUBLIC BUT UNFORTUNATELY ALL WISE MEN ARE SEEING THIS SCENE MUTELY LEAVING OTHERS TO DIE IN GRACE..... The second biggest problem is THERE IS NO LORD KRISHNA HERE TO RESCUE ALL OF US...

Thus, all those who are praising and lauding democracy to the last mile ..... PLEASE THINK Again ................

The Southern film Industry

After taking care of reservations & family planning, Avuthu-pottu is now back to analyze the southern film industry.

Couple of months ago, when Thespian RAJKUMAR died a natural death, a lot of hue and cry happened in Karnataka. Buses were torched, vandalization of property, riots in all places, stone-pelting in some pockets and what not !! It is as if the entire Karnataka wanted to protest Yamadeva's action of taking the thespian's life.

I more or less felt that the action was purely to show to entire world that there existed a Kannada film industry in India. When Veerapan kidnapped RAJKUMAR, India came to know that there existed a hero in this part of world (at an age of 60+ is still remarkable). Then Kannada industry went a step further and banned new hindi films from being released in Bangalore citing protection of local industry. The local industry still did not do well with this protectionist measure as there is simply a lack of quality in their movies. Now let me explain you how ....

The Malayali film industry like the Bengali one had an excellent lot of script-writers. Now a film is not complete by just writing a script. You need actors/actresses to completely do justice to that script. Actresses were bounty of the range of Meera Jasmine, Asin & Shakeela. These actresses covered a wide gamut of scripts and made movies which even rule the Mallu land today.

But in case of actors, they did not have a new face after Mamooty and MohanLal... The Tamil industry came to the rescue in the form of providing faces like VIJAY, AJITH, SURYA, DHANUSH, VIKRAM & even the good-ol THALAIVAR (RAJNI-KANTH) ... The partnership took the industry by storm and even today Tamil film industry has a better revenue than the Bollywood. Actors like VIKRAM, THALAIVAR are better payed than Amitabh or Shahrukh today.

The Telugu film industry had been languishing all these years. It's only face N.T RAMA RAO made upteen number of movies potraying himself as "LORD KRISHNA" and winning elections. The Telugu film industry saw this booming opportunity in their southern neighbours. Now, ideally all Gults are good at mugging (hard-work). You can see the amount of marks they score in exams purely by mugging formulaes ... 100/100 in the english paper is child's play here ....
They simply started dubbing the Tamil films in Telugu. The people enjoyed good, fresh new faces on screen as well as savoured on the histrionic skills of tamil actors. You can safely the entire industry rode on the success of Tamil films in Tamil Nadu.

Now the Kannada film industry felt that it was left behind. It could not copy the movies made by Tamil film industry as there were lot of ego problems created between the two states by a river dispute. So Kannada film industry started borrowing from Telugu film industry (That lead to their demise as they started borrowing ORIGINAL scripts of the Telugu industry).
Now these scripts and movies are typical. You have a hero who will dance in extremely gaudy clothes (yellow shirt on orange pant types)around trees with a hands on a 42 inch belly swerving around a comparable heroine ... Andavaa!! Even my hands shudder when i have to describe such a scene in detail.

The movies have the same set of story-line with a unrelated rape scenes & obscene dances thrown in between so as to capture the attention of audience for the entire span of 3 hours. And this is how most films came to be characterized. The people of Karnataka initially enjoyed but then became mature as a result of mingling with outsiders pouring in karnataka. To this date, a single Kannada film has not been described a nation-wide hit either due to superior script or due to it's star-cast.
And what even irritates me to the point is the very persons who support the spread of Kannada language by such goosy measures send their sons to work in companies abroad or put them in the best english medium schools across india.

I do not have many kannada friends as of date, but i heard that these people are very passionate about their film industry. I would like to hear their views on this........

Myths of Reservations

A brief story:

4 men were staying togethar in a hut namely A,B,C,D ... A said i'll go to find some food .. Maybe even hunt .. I can't stay hungry ... the remaining three agreed .. They waited for a long time ... A didn't turn up .. so B said .. I better take this grass with me and look for some hungry animal which can give me something in exchange ..
When A & B went out ... C said to D ... instead of waiting for them let us do something... The hut is dirty so C said to D why don't you clean around .. meanwhile i'll attempt to light this hut with minimal resources which we have around ...

Finally A&B returned and C& D completed their respective JOBS .... and the day ended.
This soon extended and rules were made in which duties were fixed for a person without exchange .... son of A did A's job .. son of B did B's job and so on .. This absolute division of labour resulted in what we call as the great indian divide for the next 2000 years .... A,B,C prospered whereas poor D was made to suffer throughout .. he remained poor and soon became used to taking orders ....... A,B,C thus continued to relish their prosperity ... D did not bother to retaliate ...

Note: essentially all these were similar type of persons in the beginning ... (99% gene pool was same ... only 1% differed)

Modern world teaches you a lot many things .... In body ..when people say the most important part is not the brain, heart or lungs ... but the garbage clearing mechanisms ... D realized this that he was made to dirty work all along and ....

Cut to 2006:

A lot of Hue and cry is being made in the name of reservations these days.. People in India really love to form communities on orkut these days condemning reservations but when it really comes for a peaceful protest on the grounds of mumbai .. you find that people rarely turn up ... Leave that apart !! I have a few questions to ask all these protestors :

1) For the so called hard core reservation opposers i have a question : Why do you all fill the minority form when you go to united states ? why do you all claim benefits of US affirmative action programs ?

2) Why do you oppose reservation in all forms ? Do you think the best things in life happen by merit ? Do you believe that being able to score marks in such a skewed one dimensional entrance test makes you worthy ? Why don't you design entrance test capable of testing multiple qualities in a person ?

3) Why don't you proactively support and push through a petition supporting income-based reservation ? Why don't you attempt and use your surplus to help atleast one needy student in your life ?

4) Your ancestors have broken the circle of poverty by providence. Why are you not giving others a chance to break their circle of poverty by this scheme ?

5) You all give motivating lectures of team-work .. about how to help weaker team members .. Where is this implementation of this concept in practical life ?

The problem is accentuated by acute supply side problem where there no attempt to raise the number of seats of engineering colleges .... It is always the fear of commoditizing the entire structure .. but remember the situation is not good now either ... you throw a stone .. most likely it will hit an engineer ...

I agree that reservation in it's present form is helping a very narrow range of people to fulfill their selfish short-term motives ..... Let us beat it down and design a more acceptable form of reservation by not haggling in terms of percentages but going down to more systemic level ... Using reservations for helping the general population as a whole .... and bring that person D described earlier into an equivalent person.

Iyer - Iyengars are not alone

The motivation to write this comes from the fact that people always tend to view Iyer and Iyengar as separate .Several attempts have been made to break the ice between them. For Eg:- some of close iyengar friends are after iyer girls these days and not to forget vica-versa ... :)

It is an accepted fact that Iyengar girls have more sharper features and are beautiful but yes that's because Iyer boys are more beautiful than Iyengar boys ... (See God always creates a balance between his creations) ... The population of Iyengars is less than that of Iyers (rougly 1:8) which loosely translates as that one Iyengar is sufficient and equivalent to about 8 Iyers ....

Now there are many more statements like these which can extend the argument and are beyond the scope of my writing in English .... What i want to say that such things are healthy and promote overall growth .... See we all should never think alike .. Napolean once said " if all of them are thinking alike then only one of them is thinking " .....

Which brings me to the central point ... divisions are common in the society ... there are splits all around you (PUN UNINTENDED) and it is natural ... Where there is positive there is always negative .. People always question the natural order of things ... Look around you ...

1) Jains are split into Shwetambar and Digambar.
2) Maharashtrians are split into Kokanastha and Deshastha.
- For observing this simply watch them in action ... Their actions would speak
louder than my words.
3) Marwaris are split into Maheshwari's and Agarwals.
- equivalent of iyengars and iyers in marwari community.
4) Muslims are split into Shia's and Sunni's.
- shia's believe that successors of muhammad are as good as the man himself
sunni's believe that muhammad was the sole god and refused dynastic rights to
religious authority.
5) Christians are split into Catholic and Protestants.
- The cause of Protestant movement originated as a direct protest to the actions
of roman Catholic church.

Divisions have brought in healthy growth overall in the world ....
1)they questioned as to why assumptions were made in the particular place
2)why things were done in one particular way
3)questioned earlier heresies in the society... offlate religions are both reviewing themselves looking at each other .....

Anyway, just a passing thought ......

Ham Do - Hamare Do

I was extremely tempted to write one more blog before vacations. This habit has caught up recently and i view it as healthy as blogging has prompted me to think in diverse directions, something which i was not doing at all before ... After an analysis of my own institution, indian team spirit, nudity, internet users ... "avuthu pottu" is now directed towards "number of siblings" . Hence, one more from the stable ...

Over the years, i have observed families with single, two or more than two children. One of my conclusions is that 2 kids is the best scenario which parents can have.

1) When parents have just one child, He becomes what is popularly called in China as "The Little Emperor" of the house. Right from the birth to teenage you will find that he would have been vaccinated for all sorts of unknown diseases ... fed all sorts of dietary supplements and food stuffs .... Sent to the most expensive school. He gets the best clothes picked up for him... People come, move, act and do all things at this fella's beck and call. He becomes the only object of attention in the house. Parents shover their entire love and affection on this child. They tend to hold on a lot to their only hope in old-age and display such a possessive attitude with the child that in most cases such kind parental love tends to spoil the child. The child is not taught on aspects of sharing and on most cases you will find such children irascible, OBESE, rebellious, maverick, Intelligent, talented, egoistic. Now in no way i am viewing these qualities as negative please ... you need some of them to survive in Kaliyug.

2) When parents have more than two children: Now one thing is sure, more than two children is simply a desire of parents to have child of a desired sex (especially male child some 20-30 years back). Parents always wish: "Oh !! this time i must have a male/female child" .. As it is said, Man proposes God disposes and hence the result you get double the pleasure (twins !! you dirty mind !!) ....

In case of 3 children : In this case children are never close in age to each other (obviously, mother can't go into labour for 3 consequtive times in say about 3 years) ... A generation gap is created (most cases a gap of 15 years between eldest and younget) ...
The youngest child is as a result of parents being satisfied by their effort to have a child of their desired sex ;) . This child the most doted one in the family. The youngest child finds that he has more than two parents (The eldest doubles up as parent in case .....). He acts like a rebel and the extra love confered upon him/her makes this case similar to one-child case which i have described in detail earlier.

The middle one is the most confused and his situation i personally empathize with ... He doesn't get special love/attention for neither being the youngest nor the eldest. In most cases, he acts like a non-descript member and is often left to fend for himself/herself. Being close in age to the elder one, the middle is made to use "Second-hand" stuff passed from the elder siblings. It's as if his growing years would never be either remembered by parents nor an effort would be made to record his growing years. Efforts put in middle child case are considered at best a formality. (Procreation effort not included here !!)
The eldest one in due course becomes a grandfather to the youngest one by the age of 30 ......

In case of four children or more which seldom happens these days, the house becomes a mini-playground with sounds from all corners .... In house "CHAOS RULES" but often there is "Order in Chaos" ... The parents better have plenty of money to give the best to their children and Oh Boy !! I salute to the MOTHERS who have 4 children or more ......

3) Having children in the house is anyday better than having none ... so don't be too proud about your blood & lineage and adopt a child so as to make your life as well as some needy's child's life better .....

4) Which brings me to the best case left that is (My case !!!!) 2 children ..... Ideal combination, good/proper sibling fights , sharing qualities inculcated at early age, proper maturity and development of appropriate responsible attitude and many many more . enough stuff to write another blog i guess.....

Why India sucks in football & hockey !!

Being a true football and hockey fan, this question often engages me the most. Why a nation which is by the far the best in Cricket (a team game) fails to match with the same effort in other team games like Football and Hockey. True !! Physically we are not as superior as the Europeans, but countries like china, south korea and japan have showed that Asians too are good in football.

Then, An Ayn Rand Quote comes to mind: "Contradictions do not exist. Whenever you think you are facing a contradiction, check your premises. You will find that one of them is wrong"
I questioned myself whether cricket is really a team game as football or Hockey !! Then i realized that individual has more scope to perform here than the team and often teams are known by the individuals who represent them. The living testimony of this fact is people naming teams like Gavaskar XI or Border XI.. Offlate ! People after looking at Australians have realized that cricket has to be won by a team and not by an individual.

Now coming back to football and hockey. We, Indians, have rarely put up superlative efforts when it came to perform as a team. We look more for individual than collective glory. Psychologically, if you see, any aspirant in these two games always aspires to be a striker first. Being a defender or mid-fielder is just a chance. This is because we perceive as the one who finishes is the one who is the best (Primarily this was the reason why Hrishikesh Kanitkar was retained in the team for two years after hitting a boundary off the penultimate ball to finish the match). Hence we see Dhanraj and Baichung getting fame whereas one does not remember a certain Tirkey !!

Reflect on this: Wayne Rooney, a striker of Manchester United(my fav team) passed the ball at the right moment to Park Si Jung(his team-mate) to score the goal. He could have scored it himself but had a 50-50 chance, but gave it to Park Si Jung who finished cleanly to give United a 2-0 lead. Jung after scoring, congratulated Rooney for the pass without any delay. Professional !! Which is why good players like Terry, Ferdinand, Lampard, Gerrard, Neville are all recognized there !!

Locally, While i was playing football along with IIT boys in campus, I found that people tended to shoot even when they had 1% chance on scoring goal and for every goal scored people congratulated the striker (who obviously went into wild celebration) without bothering about the people who set his goal up for him ....

Online Hunk - Offline Junk

It is said that only few in the world suffer from split personalities. But i categorically state that almost all of us suffer from split personalities. Yes !! Evey human has two different personalities: One what he really is and one what he projects. For a few set of people this difference is not there .... To help you digest this statement, I bring you a case where the difference is extremely prominent: An Online Surfer.

My experience has with such people has made me conclude that what you perceive of such people when you interact with them online is a much different picture when you interact with them offline ....

People might disagree with me and say that "I am the sum of what i write " .. but this statement is really not true. There are certain people who write and interact well online ... They will display extremely fancy status messages ... Some of the funny ones which i encountered :-

a) Exams ---> Now, i have never seen this guy studying or doing anything but his online profile shows that he is extremely busy throughout the day
b) Dead .. will be back on **** ---> Even i get confused at the real intent of this message ... You scrap him once and you get a reply within the next 30 secs..
c) Aha !! My home i miss you so much ---> Now if he loves his home so much, then why don't i see him going home often inspite of getting chances ....
d) All sorts of philosophical thoughts which have absolutely no real connection with them in real life ......

They will reply to all your mails, scraps, pings but real life ..... I bet a $100 that they will be much much different ... They will be extremely silent, introvert fellows who have lost all the drive to take part in real physical activities ....... You can very well say that this person has two different personalities .....

The internet has really changed the way we view relationship. People have started talking with keyboards instead of the god-gifted mouth. The live example is my college hostel where neighbours chat more on the net than in each others rooms. The touch and feel relationship is slowly going down ... The net may bring in sympathy( i know what you feel!) to you .... but the empathy part is not there (I feel what you feel!) ... One of prime reasons for a suicide at my institution

People take a lot of initiatives on the net by forming communities ranging from Jessica Lal petition to protest reservation petition to what not !! but when it comes to deliver in real life by physcially working for a good cause you seldom find takers .... which i why i say chances of a revolution or an upheavel for any good cause is very feeble !!!! Pretty disturbing ..........

The importance of being Naked

There are people who have thrashed Nakedness in the following way :-

1) Every time a woman loses something, she looks better, but every time a man loses something he looks worse
2) To act with clothes on is performance, with clothes off it is documentary - Julia Roberts
3) If Miss means respectably unmarried, and Mrs. respectably married, then Ms. means nudge, nudge, wink, wink.
4) Pornography tells lies about women, but it really tells the truth about men ;)
and many many more which is enough to fill countless blogs ...

Ages people have always been confused from being Nude and being Naked.
Which is what makes me punch keystrokes in dispelling all doubts.

Nudity is more a physical phenomenon ... Nakedness is more of a mental kind .... the most fearless person on this earth is a Naked person. Which is why i feel in cricket minnows like kenya, bangladesh, Pakistan (i really consider them minnows against us at all times) at times get better of their rivals when they play fearlessly .....

when you make yourself naked and see a particular dimension/object , you will realize the beauty of things which you have never experienced or felt before . The impression of clothes merely acts like a haze which deprives you of enjoying the true worth, the true beauty for which it was created in first place.
You become fearless, objective, composed in your thoughts and actions ....

A naked man sees nobody as superior and nobody as inferior - As it is rightly said "We are by nature all as one, all alike, if you see us naked" .. A naked person comes above successes and failures, above pleasures and sorrows, above friends and foes ... to him all is the same ...... He will never waver, wander, muse in life ... To him life is a path, a road, to his destination ... which brings me to the point .. Nakedness is revolutionary .....

After reading all this, just take this two question test :

Q1. Have you at all necessary junctures in your life told your best friend/parents/siblings point-blank that a particular action which they did is wrong ? (obviously according to your point of view !!)

Q2. You may ask me why:-

1) In a orphanage, the patron visits the place once in a year. he just looks at smiling kids without realizing that these innocent cherubic ones, are just trained to smile at visitors. He would obviously smile back with sympathy at these poor souls.... similar is the case happening at my place.. Our founder visits our college once in year and asks those same materialistic questions about the happenings in and around the college .. He doesn't even bother to evaluate these kides little realizing that these are no longer kids of an orphanage but well performing youngsters who just need a big break in life .....

2) There are some people who are you can say less worse than previous one ... These people just dole out some small pity offerings like sponsoring a shirt, a mid-day meal to the most bright boy in the anath-alay and so on .. Companies in my college sponsor scholarships which seem like pittances in such an expensive world .. When it comes to employment, they do not even bother to consider such students for whom they are giving money to groom ..... obviously, just because i work for some NGO/organization (some ppl take pride in doing that !!) doesn't mean that i will bring this kids home .... NGo work is my professional life .... rest is private .....

3) The teacher's teach as if they are teaching to a deprived/impoverished lot which is different from the others in league... "By the same particular token" in one of the lectures, a teacher makes it a point to make whip my college's ass at each juncture ....

I would have loved to reveal names ... but then "Avuthu-pottu" is all about stripping events and reveal the hidden/naked truth .. the same should be applied to person's only in special cases ......

But yes Finally !!! Just like an orphanage, we all kids sit and smile in posh-blazers and crispy borrowed shirts when some rich deprived fella comes to college for placement ..... why i say this is because, they ask questions in interviews, to which we answer like kids !!

This is my first post into the blog world ...

This blog aims to uncover truths in the most simple aspects of human life
